How to calculate the number of toilets needed for an event

Hosting a big event? As well as all the other logistics you need to account for there’s no doubt that toilets should be top of the list as a must have when hosting an outdoor event. From music concerts,  markets, fetes and festivals, portable toilets are a practical necessity.

But it’s not just enough to hire a couple of port a loos and call it a day. A shortage of portable toilets can be ugly, messy and does not make for a successful event – especially if there is alcohol involved! Depending on the size and type of event will dictate how many toilets you need. Dinkum Dunnies provide clean, well equipped and modern portable toilet hire throughout Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and below we explain how to determine the number of toilets needed for your next event

How many people will be attending?

The rule of thumb is to have 1 portable toilet for every 60 guests, for a one night event, but this a general guide and sometimes we will recommend more than this if the event is running over a longer period. One toilet for 60 guests might not be sufficient if there are plenty of people drinking and if the event is primarily attended by female guests, it’s worth having more toilets to avoid the lengthy queue. Even smaller events like large house parties can benefit from hiring a port-a-loo. If there’s only one toilet in the house or you’d prefer to keep people outside, a portable toilet can be the perfect solution for a paddock bash or a 50th soiree.

How long will the event run for?

Events running all day or multiple days including festivals and events where there are people camping, are going to need more toilets. Assuming most people will use the loo at least once every 3-4 hours, should help to avoid lengthy queues to use the toilets.

What type of event is it?

Events with drinking and that are held completely outdoors will need more toilets

If it’s a drinking event  what goes in comes out rather quickly and it is imperative there are enough toilets otherwise things can get messy and it can really ruin the event.

Spending money on toilet hire may not be the most glamorous area to focus on when planning an event, but if you skimp on the number of toilets, your guests aren’t going to be happy and it can even lead to a negative overall opinion of the event. Accommodating all the different needs of your event, including toilet facilities, is arguably just as important as the event itself in ensuring it’s a success.
